Still Plotting...

So, I'm on the track of a new yarn to try the Phildar Swing Jacket- Berroco "Zodiac," which I was ABOUT to buy from Webs Yarn- and then decided to sleep on it- and now the colorway I want is sold out.. boo!

I'm considering looking into Berroco's other yarns- I've found several of them online at a discount, so that's a plus. I want something with weight, but not a lot of bulk and also not scratchy or thick- I want this to be a spring jacket (which at this rate, I'll finish around June)

I've also started a surprise for weston's birthday (july- I'm starting ahead)- I'm making a quilt for our bed to match the new paint colors- it's going to be modern, not country at all- silver gray background and reds, purples, blacks, sagey greens and mauvey colors. I've never quilted before, so I'm really excited about the process. I'm loving the rotary cutter and mat, and the idea of making something big out of little squares and triangles.

Phildar, part deux

I'm so pleased with my previous Phildar sweater that I'm going for another one. #23 Asymmetrical Sweater from Tendances Automne 06/07. It's K3P3 ribbed, with an off center button band and a high neck. I have some acrylic in my stash that's soft and I'm hoping to achieve something close to guage with it.

I also want to make the phildar swing jacket from this same issue, but I'm stuck on finding the right yarn for it. I think this project will keep me busy for a while. I'd like to use up the "cheap" yarns I bought when I first started knitting so that I can justify buying some nice stuff for future projects.

My husband and I are going to Ireland at the end of April also- so hopefully I can raid some yarn shops overseas and get some great stuff :)

I'm so pleased!! It fits perfectly, after I lengthened the hem 3 inches... I'm wearing it out today- and I can't wait for someone to mention it :) hee hee.

I don't think I ever imagined making a real sweater- especially from a french pattern company (although I did have help from a wonky english translation).

I used Caron Simply Soft Tweed, probably 8 skeins, and size 5 boyd needlemaster needles. I also did all of the cables using a bent paperclip :) Genius is the mother of invention..

And so the end becomes the middle..

I did it!! Well, I started to do it, and it's working. After consulting several resources online, I figured out how to pull out my cast on and pick up stitches WITHOUT twisting them, and I've already added 1.5 inches to my Phildar Cabled Yoke Sweater- invisibly. I was especially pleased when I asked weston where HE thought the former bottom of the sweater was and he didn't have any idea- and he was actually looking at it :)

The in-laws are coming to town sat/sun, and we're going to the IKEA in burlington- I can taste the meatballs already :) AND I hope to wear my new sweater then :)

Also, I should look for the camera cord, because frankly- blog postings without photos are kinda bland.

Joanne and I went on a yarn shopping expedition in the snow on saturday. We had been planning it since our christmas shopping on elmwood was in danger of "shopping for gifts for ourselves" and it was great. Sadly Jill was not there, but we both walked away with some great buys. I bought some merino/silk blended fingering weight yarn which is hand-dyed a deep purple and blue, and a lace weight skein of merino in the deep purple. LOVE THEM. So, despite the fact is was snowing sideways, and there was zero visibility, I decided that I needed to go to Barnes and Noble and find a pattern book. I walked away with "Domino Knitting" and it's a great match for my self patterning yarn. I'm making a scarf (I think) and it's turning out pretty well. I LOVE the yarn, although I'm usually hesitant to buy yarn that self stripes, because I prefer solid colors and don't like unmatched stripes, but using this modular domino knitting, it creates a great/random effect.

My Phildar sweater hasn't changed much. I pulled out the "added" on hem because it looked messy, and I've decided I need a better reference book than my current Vogue Knitting- abridged version. I'm anxious to wear it- but, as they say Life gets in the Way.

Weston put in a new hot water tank sunday, and we went to a superbowl party- yum, swedish meatballs (imported from the Burlingon, ON, CA- IKEA!!) We had fun groaning at the game and commercials.. and the half time show- I mean, where did prince come from? Was Fergie busy or something? I realize he just won an award at the SAG, or was it Golden Globes? But it was for a theme song to some animated film I think- I don't think he's posed for a comeback anytime soon- although the electric turquoise suit and orange shirt would be a great new fashion trend. I hope the Fugster Girls comment on it- but it appears that they're covering NY fashion week- which is great, SP 07 fashion, and it's -20 degrees outside. When does that happen? Well, maybe NYC is slightly warmer- with the windchill it's only -12 degrees. :)

So last night, I finished it!! I figured out how to make an invisible seam- wove in all the loose ends and tried it on... The good news is, it covers my boobs perfectly, actually the size is SPOT ON!! The bad news, well- it's awfully short. I'm not sure if my row gauge was off or if french people just like exposing their midriffs..

So, I took back the needles, and picked up stitches along the bottom hem and will need to add at least 2 if not 3 inches. My mother suggested adding a cable/rib pattern to mimick the yoke, but I haven't totally decided on that.

Here's hoping that it will be ready to wear some time this week :)

So, apparently I can't count. Regents Honors Diploma, BA cum laude and part of an MBA- and I can't count to 288 stitches.

Work on my phildar sweater is 1 step ahead and 2 steps back. I've brought together the front, back and sleeves and started the yoke in the round- 3 times!! One of these times I'm going to get it.. oy.

I'm really pleased with it though- I hope it fits, it seems kinda small- but as I told my sister- if it doesn't fit, happy birthday to you!!

I'm working on a beautiful Phildar sweater, with a cabled yoke. I finished the back and I'm working on both sleeves at the same time. It's construction is like a bottom up raglan, so I'm hoping that when I get through the sleeves, I'll be highly motivated to finish the front so that I can just put it all together.

Eunny Jang's Venezia pullover from the Winter Interweave has been in the back of my mind, but I find that the golds and mossy green tones wouldn't be all that flattering for my skin tone, so I'm inspired to create my own palette, and probably my own fair isle pattern- I'm not especially fond of boat necklines- I HATE showing brastraps, so I think it will require some serious contemplation and rewriting of the pattern.

pinwheel baby blanket

We had a lovely trip to the finger lakes, drank plenty of wine and have a couple cases sitting in the dining room waiting for another round. I've been knitting feverishly, working on a pinwheel baby blanket in Lily Sugar N Cream. The cotton is really a nice change from all the wool blends I"m used to working with. The color is a nice khaki/white blend- and despite the color pooling being really random, I really like it. I find it takes me about 3 hours to finish one skein, which leaves me with about 12 hours of work left before next saturday. Not too bad.

Geez.

So apparently, I've been missing since april- which isn't surprising because work got crazy and I'm just starting to see some vacation time. (yeah, it's the end of july- I know)

In the good news column though- our house is looking awesome. We built a patio and we have tomato plants and basil and peppers and parsley and I didn't kill any of the flowers and our porch is repaired and repainted and the kitchen is all fixed up and we managed to hang (all 4 pieces) all of our artwork on the walls.

And, I got accepted into the MBA program- so I'm another step closer to getting paid to do what I want (hopefully when I want :)

Knitting- I'm still working on that tendrils scarf- beaded knitting isn't very hard, I actually like it- but cabling takes longer than I prefer (perhaps because I don't use a cable needle?) There are several babies due in october and also my best friend's wedding in october also- so I have plenty of projects to keep me busy- I'll try really hard to resurface more often :)

Hey- there's a new knitty out!!

Just what I needed to get my crafty self back in the swing of things. I've heard some rumblings that the patterns aren't that great- but I've got to say- there's always some really dowdy, unappealing things. I enjoyed the articles- and I'm tempted to try spinning also.

The one pattern I really like is called Tendrils- I've never knitted with beading before- but I think I can handle it after that article too.

And here it is one week ago- before the floors were refinished- excuse the dust, we were still finishing the drywall on the ceiling...

And- if I can find that silly digital camera cord- you could see we have actually moved in and there's a carpet and furniture and half empty boxes everywhere- and eventually I'll find all my craft supplies and make my posts a little more interesting...

Till then, I'll just keep reading everyone else's posts at work :)

No knitting for a week- this is some kind of record.

The new House is coming along- in one week it's gone from liveable, but ugly to completely unliveable to delapidated to the point where I don't have to take a big breath before walking in.

The ceilings in the main floor are taken out and awaiting my father-in-law's arrival next week. We bought the drywall to fix them- I even got to rent the truck at lowe's and drive it around!! So much fun. It even beeped when it went in reverse. I was quite a sight- normally I drive a little purple kia, and here I am in my 5'2" glory driving a truck (I had to hold onto the steering wheel to hoist myself into it) with drywall hanging out the back gate- totally awesome.

Anyways, we also had wall paper on every surface that wasn't wood- so we scraped ALL of that off, and then were left with yellow glue on every wall. Let me make a short testamonial that "DIF" by zinsser is the best chemical I've ever encountered. It's magical. We bought the concentrate- mix with warm water, use a roller to apply to the wall- wait a few minutes and scrub the glue off with a scrubby thing. Rinse with a sponge and warm water et voila- virgin plaster walls!!

So, we just have a little bit of the living room and the upper part of the 2 story staircase left to do (And the bedrooms we haven't touched yet)

I doubt I'll be knitting for a while- probably not until the 26th when we drive to Albany for the day to go to a wedding. But, I'm sure I can scrounge up some more house pics if anyone was interested.

So, I've learned quite a bit from my Olympic experience. First of all, I learned that I'm petite. Therefore, making a garment based SOLELY on my bust size is a mistake. Especially when the row gauge is a little off... (Or, moreso that I wasn't sure what the row gauge was b/c I didn't measure that one...)

So, in essence, my vest is not very flattering- think football linebacker. I need to rip out at least 12 rows from the neck/shoulders (which of course, also means ripping out the neck and armbands first- then ripping the actual knitting and then reknitting the neck/armbands)

Also, we closed on our house- so last night, instead of trying to fix my vest- we destroyed the popcorn ceilings and ripped up carpet- I actually have a picture of that part...

BTW- how HEART WRENCHING is it to put the garment you've been slaving over for 2 weeks in a basin of warm soapy water? Let me tell you- it took a couple of REALLY deep breaths to go through with it!

I did it!! What was I so afraid of? Crocheting isn't that hard- I don't know why I was so worried.. I finished the knitting late last night and finished the steeks this morning- and then I went for it- snip snip... It worked really well, nothing came unravelled (well, the bound off edge on the top did a little, but I secured it without too much hassel).

And then the moment of truth- I tried it on! It fits perfectly in the torso part- hopefully I'll be able to make enough ribbing for the neckline so it's not totally x-rated :)

Of course- the camera is at home and I'm at work until after midnight- but, believe me- it's a thing of beauty! (Oh, and I'm SO almost out of black yarn.. but that can be easily enough remedied- how excited am I to have Thursday off??)

Weekend Success

Well, I'm 4 rows from binding off the Argyle vest- and then to start the steeking!! I'm frightened by the crocheting, but the directions in the pattern (3 full pages of them) seem very straight forward, so I'm ready for it!

In other news, we close on our new house in exactly 1 week. My Father in law is taking a week off of work to live at the new house and help my husband and I fix it up. We're very lucky people!!

Well, all is not lost- I managed to recreate my damaged section and I'm back on track. I'm hoping to finish the knitting part of this by monday so that I have a couple days to crochet the steeks and cut etc.

I think working on this project is all about the right attitude. It seems to fly by when I'm in a good mood and I'm less likely to make mistakes- I think my flubs were created when I was REALLY tired and watching a movie after drinking a bottle of wine with my husband after dinner. So- new rule for olympic knitting- no more drinking before the project!!! (or revised- don't stay up late after drinking just to work on it- sleeping is better for both me and the project!)

So, I've taken Kelly's Challenge: (In the spirit of full disclosure, I only listen to Jazz 91.1 (Jazz.fm) on the radio which is a nonprofit station out of Toronto- you can listen to their feed online- so I'm not really listening to popular music lately)

My argyle sweater is made with Lion Wool- I got gauge using sz6 needles instead of Eunny's recommended sz4. It's a mauvey-pink and black.

About puckering: I've been fortunate to not have much puckering- except when I forget to add in the bottom of a black diamond that comes in the middle of the black/pink checkering part- and then I have to drop where I made pink and pick up the black, but there isn't enough black slack there, so it puckers a bit. It's not too noticeable, so I hope that blocking will help. (It looks funny inside though because there's extra long pink strands randomly in those parts)

Stephanie- are you knitting with yarn on both hands or one handed? I'm an English knitter normally, but I'm starting really get the hang of using both hands- I might even be continental when I'm done with this project- I like how fast it's progressing- it's nice to be able to read the pattern as I'm knitting and not have to look at the chart for every stitch.

In my blogsurfing today I came across Cathy of "Eat Sleep Knit" who recently deconstructed a salvation army bought sweater using the Neauveau tutorial. I'm excited by the possibility of finding enough nice yarn in a previously made sweater to make the Rebecca Cable Turtleneck (Did I mention I FINALLY got the Rebecca 28 I ordered almost 2 weeks ago?) It takes so much yarn, and I'm not really comfortable spending that much money unless I know the pattern is going to be flattering.

Of course, we're closing on our new house in 2 weeks and trying to pack up the apartment, so the chances of me buying a sweater, taking it apart, washing it and letting it dry in my bathroom are pretty slim.. and probably less slim once we move- b/c there's so much work that needs to be done on the house- I can see plaster falling on the new clean yarn already..

The hubby and I are going out to dinner tonight (for valentine's day- yes I know it's tomorrow- but one of us undoubtedly works on valentine's, so typically we have valentine's lunch- but he has a class during lunch tomorrow- hence, valentine's pre-dinner tonight) at Left Bank which should be good- I'm not thrilled with their wine list, but I love local, upscale restaurants..

Knitting Olympics Special Report:

Here we are on Day 3 of knitting- and I have successfully learned how to:
Read a Chart
Fix mistakes a couple rows below
knit with both hands at the same time

I'm pleased with the results thus far- I'm just past the waist shaping smallest part and moving up towards setting my first neckline steek :)

Row 50 (in addition to original 19 rows of ribbing).

I'm optimistic about going for the gold in my event- so far, so good.

(Did I mention that Eunny wrote a REALLY good pattern? You can buy it off her Blog for $5.95 and it's worth every penny- there's like 6 sizes and 16 pages of directions and charts- totally impressive - which reminds me- I need to find some knitting software to chart out some ideas I have)

Olympic Training Commences

Due to the fact my Rebecca 28 magazine isn't here yet, and I don't even have the yarn- much less swatches done for Friday- I've revised my Knitting Olympics Challenge: The Deep V Argyle Sweater by Eunny Jang.

She wrote the pattern after high demand from seeing her finished product- and it's glorious. It's knit using Fair Isle Stranding, and I made a practice swatch today in hot pink and black. I finally got the gauge using sz6 needles instead of the sz4 called for in the pattern- but I'm not using the same yarn either. I had to settle for Lion Wool, which is unfortunate because I almost had the $70.00 worth of wool/alpaca/cashmere blend rationalized earlier today.

Knitting with yarn coming out of both hands is taking some getting used to- but now I'm so pumped for the opening ceremony!! I'm itching to start..

I finished the short row rib scarf last night- now if I could only find the italian address to mail it to.

This is the second time I've made this pattern- and I'm pleased with it. My only complaint is how the bind off edge turns out- it's never as tight as the cast on edge, which I find frustrating.

I am in LOVE with this sweater!!! I am SO in love, that I actually ordered the Rebecca #28 Magazine in order to have the pattern. We're talking about a $20.00 european knitting magazine.. I swear, I'm in lala land if I think I'll actually have time to work on it!!

My sister's scarf is half finished- but I'm concerned because I need to mail it to Italy- and I'm not sure how long that will take- and considering her bday is in 11 days, I really need to get cracking.

In looking back, I have never knit anything for myself- so as a resolution for 2006- I'm going to making something for myself- maybe these socks would be a good try :)

Also, I discovered this podcast, KnitCast - it's really pretty interesting. Maybe I'll download some and put them on my mp3 player for when I'm at the gym.

Last December, I saw U2 in concert- needless to say it was breathtaking, even from our nosebleed seats half behind the stage. I think my favorite part was when the entire arena was singing along- hearing that many people sing (almost) the same words was incredible.

This morning I have elevation stuck in my head-- oooooo, elevate my soul.... it's better with the band in the background :)

I just saw/read/devoured something that has completely inspired me- Eunny Knits and her deep V neck sweatervest done in intarsia fair isle with steeks!!! She has brilliant tutorials- and I'm so fascinated by the idea to CUT YOUR KNITTING IN HALF!! It's amazing- I really need to try it!!

Progress: I pulled the needles out of anouk- she hasn't unravelled yet, but I'm going to destroy her soon. The scarf for my sister is going ok- I had a brief moment of insanity where I thought I remembered the pattern well enough to not really read it through before working on it- I totally forgot the k2tog part at the center of each short rib row and suddenly the scarf was getting really wide- but it was a quick rip, and I'm back on track. Good thing too- If it's going to arrive in Italy before Feb 12th, I better get it finished soon!!

Here's my progress on the baby raglan cardigan.

I just need to finish the second sleeve and weave in ends/ put on buttons. I was thinking pink hearts would be cute- or daisies. I might embroider an initial on it- I think the baby's name will be Elise or something like that...

It's pretty amazing that I ended up with this one- despite my lengthy study of the French Language- I've never been. Instead I spent a summer on the Italian Coast... Ask me about it sometime- it was glorious- I should scan some of my pictures!!

On other news, I finished my Irish Hiking scarf (Happy 17th Birthday Angelica!!) and have decided that "anouk" is horribly disfigured. I started making a top down raglan cardigan instead, and it's 80% complete!!

Upon further inspection of the pattern however, I discovered that it was actually a pinafore- not a dress. I don't think that is very practical for a baby, so I began knitting it in the round. It came along nicely, until I started knitting it flat and my stitches were crooked!!

Fortunately, Knitty's Coffeeshop to the rescue- and apparently I need to knit through the front leg in order to fix it- and it worked!!
